Hi, I’m Susan,

And I’m glad you’re here. Because I wasn’t the star athlete or math student growing up—tall, awkward, and fumbling through fractions. But hand me a sentence diagram? I was unstoppable.

That’s how copyediting and proofreading found me. I hear when a sentence stumbles. I notice when a rhythm’s off. I see the small things that interrupt what you’re trying to say.

Sometimes I read a paragraph and my brain just stops: a missing beat, a word that isn’t quite right, a place where readers might pause unnecessarily.

That’s the work.

I’m not here to rewrite your story. I’m here to help you see it clearly, so your words reach readers without losing what made them yours in the first place.

That’s how I work with fiction writers. I point things out. I leave notes in the margins. I whisper, “Hey, take a look at this,” and otherwise leave your story exactly yours.

That feeling you get when a book simply carries you along—when nothing trips you up or pulls you out?

That’s what we’re protecting.

“Editing isn’t correction ... it’s attention and care.”

“However you want to write your book, Susan allows your voice to remain yours.”

Coffee Talk with Susan

Writing a novel isn’t easy.

Pull up a chair for this fiction editor’s random observations about putting the finishing touches on your manuscript.

Be reminded that your writing milestones are never too small to celebrate.

And read along with my—oftentimes—oddball thoughts, and the questions that tend to pop up as you get your manuscript ready for agents or readers (some may be exactly what you’ve been wondering).
