Starting my Blog

"I plan to work from home."

My boss just looked at me and blinked.

Over the course of the last decade, I had been following the same old 9 to 5, enduring the challenges of the pandemic, and witnessing the bittersweet moments of my children growing up and eventually moving out. Now, I’m gonna do things a bit differently. My desire for change would lead me to start a business where I could work from home, enjoying the freedom to prioritize my family and myself, manage my bottom line, and have control over my schedule. With a leap of faith, I started a proofreading and editing business, immersing myself in the fabulous world of words and honing my skills to assist writers with bringing their stories to readers. I was determined to harness all of my creative powers.

Have you ever considered exploring the world of editing or proofreading, or is it time to finally unleash your creativity and start that book you’ve been meaning to write? Join me as I share my process, thoughts, and some moments when I nearly quit, almost threw the computer out the window, and had a near nervous breakdown. I make it a point not to take myself too seriously these days. So, laughing about these things helps me maintain my mindset.

I always thank my stars and remind myself that my decision to work from home is a process, and, Lord, it sho’ isn’t easy at times!

Hi, I’m Susan, a caffeine enthusiast. (Read, coffee addict.) Whether it’s the coffee or the never-ending list of ideas in my mind, I don’t sleep until those ideas are typed out on the page, read several times over, and edited until they are as nearly perfect as possible. I dedicate my time between writing a beloved collection of children’s books and the fulfilling work of bringing clients’ book editing projects to life. My home in Princeton, Illinois, is a charming farm where hubby and I care for our animal menagerie, now dwindling down to a couple dozen chickens and my daughter’s retired show horse. Hmm… maybe it’s time to adopt a goat or two, perhaps a Highland cow.

Join me every couple of weeks for editing and proofreading tips, writing hacks, as well as some entertaining antics of the animals that used to be a part, or still call, my small farm paradise home.

See you in a couple of weeks!

Susan will be the first to admit… she’s a nerd.

Whether tending to her garden, fearlessly experimenting with flavors in the kitchen, or putting the first brush to a blank canvas, she’s constantly immersed in creative/nerdy pursuits.

When an opportunity to leave her 9 to 5 arrived, she didn’t hesitate to chase her dream of working with words. Her goal was to become an editor and motivate writers to share their stories with the world. Ironically, it was in the world of words and children’s literature where her creative spirit truly blossomed. Drawing from the memories of her grandparents’ farm and the barn she grew up in, her stories for young readers beautifully incorporate themes of family, farm life, kindness, caring, friendship, and acceptance.

She and her hubby live on a small farm in Princeton, Illinois. Her kids have grown and moved out, but over the years, she’s been caretaker to a flock of escape-artist chickens, her daughter’s lovely saddlebred horse, and a cantankerous goose that became the star of her children’s stories.
